Opening Reception: Edifice

Join us at the A Gallery for the opening reception of “Edifice” by artist Katie Miller, opening to coincide with Pioneer Square Seattle’s First Thursday Art Walk on January 3, 2019.

Edifice explores the rapidly changing built environment and how our perception of place is informed by our surroundings. As the urban core develops, buildings rise in areas that were once open and spacious. Neighborhoods are littered with construction sites, exposing architectural frameworks and superstructures. Utilizing forced-perspective, shifts in scale, and varied linear repetition, Miller distills the lines, angles, and forms revealed through the building process into cut paper sculptures. The imagery—depicted as void and layered or segmented and then reanimated with light and shadow—expresses the ephemeral nature of our contemporary urban environments. Katie Miller was born and raised in the pristine wilderness of Northeastern Minnesota, but is now deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest.

As an interdisciplinary artist, Miller creates site-specific installations often with experiential and participatory elements. Her artistic practice embodies experimentation, observation, and research to establish an environment in which viewers can relate to and reflect on their surroundings. She received a BFA from the University of Washington and an MFA from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University. She has participated in numerous artist residency programs and her work has been exhibited in Seattle and across the country.
