UNDER A HUNGRY MOON | new works by Sofia Arnold

ZINC Contemporary is proud to present a second solo exhibition with Artist Sofia Arnold - UNDER A HUNGRY MOON. As in past works, Arnold’s elusive narratives take place in lush and feral environments filled with romance and lurking danger. A surrealist to her toes, the new works loom large with the artist’s distinctive palette, swirling brushstrokes, and almost recognizable objects - creating a pleasurable quicksand for the eye. Arnold’s work is largely informed by her experiences and memories from childhood. Growing up a daughter of 1970s “back to the landers” in the unglaciated hills of South Western Wisconsin, Arnold reflects on a former life at the fringe of society, oscillating between feral and civilized, savage and feminine. Her figures dance and interact with creatures and vegetation in the murky wooded countryside. They hauntingly emerge from behind trees and interact awkwardly with others. Working quickly, she uses a technique of wet-on-wet to create muted colors and dreamlike imagery. Her work plays in primal tension between freedom and suffocation.
