SEATTLE – June 14, 2022 – Feeling “unmoored” fueled the upcoming exhibit for local artists Mathew Potter and Lindsay Peyton. Both painters will be debuting new works at Axis Gallery in July. Potter’s focus is on the intersection of abstraction and observation, where landscape becomes more referential than observed, and the subconscious becomes a main source. He explores the feeling of not being from a particular place, while incorporating images from daily life and developing a unique visual language based on personal experiences. Peyton’s paintings also explore memory, the concepts of home and travel, as well as migration and movement. For her, all are tied to a larger theme of dislocation. The work, which has become more three-dimensional, examines nostalgia, longing and looking into the past. Scale plays an important role for both artists. As the paintings grow larger, the art becomes a place in itself. Potter and Peyton both invite the viewer to enter that space and explore their own ideas of location and connection to an emotional landscape.
