PIONEER SQUARE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
WHAT WE DO
PUBLIC SAFETY
As with any downtown neighborhood, Pioneer Square has challenges when it comes to public safety. Through difficult times, the community has banded together to create a safe, hospitable neighborhood for all people to enjoy. Our work to improve public safety continues, and we do so by providing advocacy and consulting to the City through our Public Safety Committee. The projects which the Public Safety Committee are working on include:
• Creation and implementation of a program that will bring off-duty police officers to Pioneer Square 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. We are working closely with the city and other fiscal agents to secure funding for this program which will greatly change the public safety perception of our neighborhood. We hope to have dedicated police officers in Pioneer Square to learn the neighborhood and assist us in making it a better and safer place to visit.
• Advocate for the return of the Joint Assessment Team to Pioneer Square. Due to budget cuts, the Joint Assessment Team (JAT) was cut from Pioneer Square. Our committee has been working with the city to advocate for the team's return to the Square.
•
Temporary fencing around Fortson Square was brought in as an attempt to disrupt the drug-related activity, prominent in Fortson Square. The Public Safety Committee worked to secure a new fence around the public art project. Since that time drug related activity has significantly dropped.
The Public Safety Committee meets on the 2nd Thursday of every month at 3:30pm. Meetings are held at the PSCA office. Please contact Craig Montgomery for details.
PUBLIC SPACES PLANNING
Public Spaces planning is an arduous task. The Pioneer Square Community Association works closely with community volunteers, who sit on the Public Spaces Committee, to develop and execute plans to best utilize vacant spaces or update existing spaces in Pioneer Square. The Public Safety Committee was incredibly successful in 2005 advocating for Public Space updates and revitalization projects. The projects they helped make successful and projects that are forthcoming include:
• Completion of the Pioneer Place Park renovations and the upcoming
Occidental Park renovations.
• Completion of paving and the subsequent "Dumpster-Free" project in the "Compass Center" alley.
•
Securing funding from the City Council to make long awaited pedestrian lighting improvements in 2006.
•
Securing funding from the City Council to improve sidewalks along 2nd and Yesler in front of the Metropole Building and the Tashiro-Kaplan Building.
•
Continue to advocate for market-rate residential buildings in Qwest Field's North Lot, Johnson Building upgrade, and others.
The Public Spaces Committee meets on the third Thursday of every month at 11:30pm. Meetings are held at the PSCA office. Please contact Craig Montgomery for details.
BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT AND
NEIGHBORHOOD MARKETING
The Pioneer Square Community Association works hard to help Pioneer Square and its businesses thrive by: executing resolutions passed by the PSCA Board of Directors for neighborhood improvements, organizing events to stimulate positive activity in our parks, and marketing businesses through our Economic Development and Marketing Committees just to name a few.
Some of this years successful neighborhood marketing and business improvement
projects include:
• Production and distribution of 150,000 Pioneer Square Maps available throughout the city
• Creation and launch of the Pioneer Square Historical Audio Tour, available at our Occidental Mall Information Kiosk and in our office
• Summer-long Staffing of the Occidental Mall Information Kiosk
• Installation and maintenance of neighborhood flower baskets
• Design and Upkeep of neighborhood banners
• Production and Printing of the long-awaited Pioneer Square History Book
• Execution and Marketing of Pioneer Square Events including: First Thursday's Art in the Park Presented by Art Patch, Funky Market, Outdoor Movies Series, Pioneer Square Bucks Holiday Sweepstakes, and Pioneer Square Holiday Market.
